This web site has been created to share information and invite comments about the importance of Stockton’s history and heritage. As Newcastle’s oldest suburb with history that goes back to the first settlement in the 1870s a walk around the town will show many reminders of the archeological, social, industrial and maritime activities that have occured over the years.
It is sometimes a controversial issue to talk about what gives an area its own character or sense of place. Stockton has been variously described as “like a country town” , “with a village feel to it” and “a suburb going through change”. The Heritage Study attached to this report was produced to enable the possibility of future planning to enhance and protect the unique nature of Stockton. There is also some information from the Department of Planning which explores issues that are facing coastal towns.
